Solon Crowns Four Championship on its Way to Team Title at North Linn

Solon crowned four individual champions on its way to capturing the team title at the North Linn Lynx Invitational on Saturday in Troy Mills.

Bryce West, Drew West, Graeson Dall and Mike Hoyle all won individual titles for Solon as the Spartans rolled up 236.5 points.

Williamsburg was second with 218 followed by Dyersville Beckman with 123 points.

Bryce West won the 120-pound title to improve to 18-1 on the season while Drew West finished first at 126 pounds while upping his season mark to 18-1.

Dall (16-3) won the title at 152 pounds while Hoyle (14-4) won the 170-pound championship.

Tyler Linderbaum added a runner-up finish at 285 pounds and Trevor Nelson was second at 160 pounds for Solon.

Solon Runs Win Streak to Four with Overtime Victory over Beckman

Overtime was unkind to Solon in its only loss of the season.

On Friday the Spartans made the most of the extra four minutes.

Solon outscored Dyersville Beckman 11-9 in overtime running its winning streak to four with a 63-61 win over the Blazers in a WAMAC East Division matchup in Solon.

Jacob Coons led four Solon players in double figures with 15 points as the Spartans improved to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in WAMAC East play.

Ben Krutzfeldt had 14 points, Luke Ira had 11 and Sterling McIlravy added 10 as Solon remained unbeaten since its overtime loss to Center Point-Urbana.

Mitch Gehling had a game-high 19 points to lead Beckman (3-3, 1-3 WAMAC).

Solon Splits a Pair of Duals at WAMAC Triangular

The top-four matchup between Western Dubuque and Solon on Thursday was every bit as good and as even as advertised.

Class 3A fourth-ranked Western Dubuque and 2A No. 2 Solon each won seven matches but bonus points lifted Western Dubuque to a 38-34 win over the Spartans in a WAMAC triangular in Anamosa.

Solon got pins from top-ranked Bryce West at 120 pounds, Graeson Dall at 152 and top-ranked Trevor Nelson at 160 pounds.

Western Dubuque had five pins among its seven wins to secure the dual win.

Solon coasted past Anamosa 78-6 in its other dual Thursday.

The Spartans won every contested match against Anamosa with a forfeit accounting for the Blue Raiders lone victory.

Solon Improves to 4-1 With Win at Anamosa

Solon continued its strong start to the season with a 63-48 win at Anamosa on Tuesday.

The win was the third straight for Solon and improved the Spartans to 4-1 on the season while Anamosa dropped to 0-5.

Jake Coons led Solon with 15 points and seven rebounds while Ben Krutzfeldt added 12 points.

Luke Ira added 11 points for Solon and Sterling McIlreavy had six points six rebounds in the wi.

Solons Wins South Tama Dual Tournament

Solon went 4-0 to win the South Tama Trojan Invitational dual tournament on Saturday in Tama.

Class 2A top-ranked Solon defeated Nevada 72-6, Omaha Burke 42-30, Independence 49-28 and 2A No. 6 South Tama on its way to the title.

Six wrestlers went unbeaten for Solon on Saturday at the dual tournament.

Bryce West went 2-0 and Drew West and Christian Haight were both 3-0 for Solon.

Dillon Diltz (182), Mike Hoyle (170) and Tyler Linderbaum all posted 4-0 records for the Spartans.

Linderbaum won all four of his matches by fall.

Solon Moves to 3-1 With Win Over Western Dubuque

Solon improved to 3-1 on the season with its second straight win, downing Western Dubuque 60-55 on Friday in a WAMAC East Division contest in Solon.

Luke Ira had 13 points, four rebounds and three blocks to lead the Spartans while Jake Coons added 12 points and six rebounds.

Ben Cusick chipped in with nine points for Solon.

Solon Defeats Central DeWitt

Solon didn’t let the effects of an overtime loss to Center Point-Urbana linger.

Three players scored in double figures as Solon defeated Central DeWitt 71-64 on Tuesday in a WAMAC east division matchup in DeWitt.

Jake Coons led three Spartans in double figures with 18 points as Solon improved to 2-1 on the season.

Ben Krutzfeldt had 16 points and AJ Coons added 13 for Solon while Sterling McIlravy grabbed seven rebounds.

Solon Finishes Fourth at Two-Day Independence Invitational

Solon got a chance to see how it would stack up against some of the best competition in the state this weekend at the Independence Invitational.

When the dust settled at the two-day, 25-team tournament the Spartans proved they belonged in the conversation with the state’s elite.

Behind runner-up finishes from Bryce and Drew West, Solon placed fourth at the prestigious invitation with 227 points.

Class 2A second-ranked New Hampton won the team title with 285 points. Class No. 3 Fort Dodge was second with 259 and Christian Brothers College of Missouri finished third with 242 points.

Solon finished 11 points in front of Cedar Rapids Prairie which rounded out the top five with 216 points.

Clear Creek Amana had three wrestlers finish in the top eight on its way to a 16th place team finish with 101 points.

Senior Bryce West went 6-1 on his way to a runner-up finish at 120 points, recording six consecutive first-period pins before falling to 3A top-ranked Brody Teske of Fort Dodge in the title match.

Drew West went 7-1 at the tournament using four pins, two tech. fall victories and a 7-0 decision to reach the title match at 126 pounds.

Drew West dropped a 7-0 decision to Malik Johnson of Christian Brothers College in finals.

Johnson Junior is top-ranked in Missouri and ranked 15th nationally at 120 pounds by Intermat.

Senior Trevor Nelson won five straight matches to reach the semifinals at 160 pounds but injury defaulted in his final three matches on his way to a sixth-place finish.

Mike Hoyle (182), Zach Wegemann (195) and Tyler Linderbaum (285) all finished fifth for Solon while Graeson Dall was sixth at 152, Zeb Gnida was seventh at 106 and Ben Carr was eighth at 138.

Cole White led Clear Creek Amana with a sixth place finish at 220 pounds.

Andrew Rohret placed seventh at 145 pounds and Myshawn Smith was eighth at 126 for the Clippers.

Spartans Win Season Opener at Independence

After winning three straight postseason games to reach the state tournament last season Solon has picked up right where it left off.

The Spartans opened the season with a 58-41 win over Independence in a WAMAC cross-divisional matchup in Independence.

Junior Luke Ira had a team-high 20 points to pace Solon while freshman AJ Coons added nine points in his varsity debut.

Ben Krutzfeldt had eight points and Zach Cusick had six rebounds for Solon.

Justus leads Solon at Williamsburg Invitational

Jorel Justus finished second to lead the Solon boys cross country team to a third place finish at the Williamsburg Invitational on Tuesday at the Williamsburg Sports Complex.

Justus finished in a time of 18:05 behind only individual champion Ben Lamparek of Williamsburg to help Solon finish with 73 team points.

Tipton won the team title with 29 points whole host Williamsburg was second with 66.

Tanner Larkey finished 16th for Solon in 19:17 while Carl Richey was 17th in 1922.

The Solon girls cross country team had had five runners place in the top 10 on its way to winning the team title at the Williamsburg Invitational on Tuesday at the Williamsburg Sports Complex.

Freshman Ella Duster and Nicole Shafer, sophomore Erin Kerkhoff and junior Sophie Nicol all finished in the top six as Solon finished with 27 points to outdistance host Williamsburg for the team title.

Duster finished third in 21:18 while Nicol was fourth in 21:33 for Solon.

Kerkhoff placed fifth, Shafer was sixth and freshman Aira Foster finished ninth as Solon finished 27 points in front of Williamsburg for the team title.

Cheyenne Shaw of North Mahaska won the individual title in 20:35.
